DARPA and DARWARS welcome you to the newly revised DoD Game Developers' Community.(Note: All content except the members list is available without logging in.)

Funded by a DoD SBIC grant, this site is intended to bring together the entire community developing games within the US military. You can:

  • find information on games in use or in development in the US military,
  • find others developing games in the various branches,
  • do research on relevant articles, papers and books, and
  • get design advice on building games.

Serious Game Summit in DC, October 18-19, 2004

The Serious Games Summit D.C. 2004 was held October 18-19, 2004 at the Loews L'Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington DC. It's goal was to give game developers the opportunity to learn from successful serious games applications and make connections with project managers from the agencies funding these projects.

Public and private sector project leaders, policymakers, contractors, military personnel, government administrators, educators, and game developers were the primary attendees.

2004 Warlords Inter-Service Academy Games Competition, September 17-18, 2004

The 2004 "Warlords" Inter-Service Academy Games Competition was held on September 17-18, 2004, at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis.

The games in the competition were "Empire Earth" with a custom scenario, "Command and Conquer Generals" and "Info Chess" in computer and table-top versions.

Naval Education Training Command -- Learning Strategies Consortium Conference, August 10-11, 2004

The Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) hosted a Learning Strategies Consortium Conference on 10 - 11 Aug 04 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Washington, DC.

The purpose of the conference was to facilitate the collaborative opportunities and sharing of innovative ideas and lessons learned in the area of learning transformation. The emphasis of this year's conference is on three key focus areas: PC Simulation and Gaming, Learning Innovations, and Workforce Strategies.

”Connections 2004” Military Modeling and Simulation Conference, August 23-27, 2004

The Connections 2004 Military Modeling and Simulation Conference was held on August 23-27, 2004, near the US Air Force Academy in Colorado.

The goal of Connections is to increase the defense utility of all conflict simulations by facilitating their evolution toward greater comprehensiveness and accessibility. Our concept for reaching that goal is to encourage the Defense and Commercial wargame communities to learn from each other and from subject matter experts in those areas of conflict that are typically not modeled well. Methods to accomplish this cross-feed include: lectures, seminars, DoD and commercial wargames demos and several social/networking events.

IDA and DMSO Launch Massive Multiplayer On-Line Game Consortium

A DMSO-sponsored seminar was held on July 8, 2003, at IDA to launch the idea of a consortium "to guide and support the effort to use a MMOG as an open and dynamic exploration space for new concepts, emergent behaviors and insights."

A workshop funded by DMSO was held on July 9-10, 2003, with the objectives of (1) Determining efficient experimental methods for isolating personality and cultural predictors in gaming style and performance; (2) developing a roadmap for empirical research around the question "Do measured personality and/or cultural variables predict performance?

"Connections 2003" Conference

"Connections 2003," the eleventh annual international conference on conflict simulation, was held 15-18 July 2003 in Rome, NY, hosted by the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Information Directorate.

The goal of Connections is to increase the defense utility of all conflict simulations by facilitating their evolution toward greater comprehensiveness and accessibility. Our concept for reaching that goal is to encourage the Defense and Commercial wargame communities to learn from each other and from subject matter experts in those areas of conflict that are typically not modeled well.

This year’s speakers included Col Westernhoff, Deputy Chief of Checkmate, Mr. James Dunnigan, Wargame Designer Emeritus, Mr. Mike Crane, Deputy Director of Faculty Research at the USAF Academy, Dr. Stephen Downes-Martin at the U.S. Naval War College, Capt Chad Etspamer, Chief of Analysis at the Air Force Wargaming Institute, and Mr. Jeff Leser at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

On May 13, 2003 a workshop was held at the E3 games expo entitled "Smart Games: The Global Scene," with a panel discussion moderated by Jesse Schell, Professor Entertainment Technology, Carnegie Mellon University. The military was represented by Michael Macedonia of PEO STRI.

A workshop with representatives fron the gaming and simulation communities was held April 14-16, 2003 at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies in Marina del Rey CA.
